THE UTILITY DISK:

THE UTILITY DISC IS FULL! You really should copy many of its programs onto several diskettes:

1) one for languages with only the MENU program and other Sideways Languages.
2) one for Wordprocessor with STL150, Word64 STLDISC and other Wordpro.
3) one for Word processor with SILEX,T1 and DIC (more about it in the separate manual.)
4) as many as you intend to use with STLDISC for example STLDISC + Beebug MF, STLDISC with graphics, STLDISC with Word64 and Wordwise etc
5) one or more containing MENU, STL0E00 etc..

THE MENU PROGRAM:

This program is a sort of handy catalog of whatever can be built or loaded into your computer. It also replaces ROMCOPY.

The display is as follows:

The top part shows what is actually in your Sideways Memory, divided into 16 boxes, numbered 0 to F. Any unused Sideways socket will have a blank box. The first 8 boxes (0-7) can contain ROMs whose names are displayed.
The remaining 8 boxes (8-F) can be occupied by Sideways RAMs.
If you load any Sideways Software into sideways RAM such as Wordwise, View, STLRFS (or run STLDISC, STL150, STLE00) etc the loaded software will be regarded as its ROM counterpart and the name of the the programs will also be displayed in the boxes.
The number of present but still unused Sideways RAM is displayed next.
If this number is 0, your installation of the Sideways RAM is unsuccessful, There is a paragraph on trouble shooting at the end of this note.

The MENU program loads Sideways Software for you in successive Sideways RAM, displaying each time the name of the program in the corresponding box.

It is not a bug that the number of SWR is at least 1: you can load into SWR F at anytime.

If the present disk does not contain therequired software, insert a new disk and press '?'.

If you have a Sideways program, its name must be in one box. The same remark applies to DFS generated by the STL150 program: the name is 'DFS'.
You can save any SWR program by pressing the '@' key. The process is made fully automatic and therefore replaces ROMCOPY and COPY2.
If the saved program cannot be loaded back, you should *DUMP it and check for its contents.

The MENU program searches the directory and finds all the necessary information enabling it to CHAIN or RUN or LOAD your programs. You select any program by entering the letter found before the wanted name. Data files can only be *DUMPed.

Once your Sideways Firmware is selected, you should quit the program by pressing the BREAK key or by running another program.

Lastly, as more programs continue to be added to the SWR utility disk, it is useful to get updated disks. If you cannot attend BBC micro user shows, you can order them every 2 months (price `2.00 +`1.00 p&p). You may want to know more about Sideways RAMs and their applications. You should then also order the TECHNICAL MANUAL (300 page book + 3 diskettes, price:`9.00 +`1.00 p&p).

BRIEF NOTES ON OTHER PROGRAMS:
STL0E00 and STLDISC are devoted to improving Disk Filing system (DFS). To run them, you should have Acorn .90 DFS in one of the Sideways boxes. STLDISC requires DFS in box <=8 and also the Solidisk.
STLDISC:
This program requires the Solidisk to be fitted (error 1 will be reported if there is not enough memory) and Acorn .90 DFS in any ROM socket or in SWR bank 8 (otherwise, error 2 will be reported). The program can be chained from the MENU. If Acorn .90 DFS is not permanently resident on your computer, you should use DRIVE1 program instead.
STLDISC has 2 added commands dealing with multi tasking: *PUSH and *POP.
*PUSH A or *PUSH B or *PUSH C will freeze the actual state of the current language and save it to disc. For example you are using Wordwise to write a letter, do *PUSH A, you can now switch to Beebcalc and get an invoice done, *PUSH B it and start Masterfile, freeze it with *PUSH C, go back to Beebcalc with *POP B etc..
*VFY (VERIFY), *F40 (FORMAT 40), *F80 (FORMAT 80) are also built in. The drive number must be specified if different from the actual drive. The formatter is the fastest available.

It is advisable to *SAVE STLE00 8000 AFFF to shorten the loading time.
ST150 or STE00 must be used in SWR F and loaded after all other Sideways Software.
SILEX, T1 and DIC: these 3 modules compose the SILEXICON fastest on earth spelling checker. You must copy them onto another disk to allow the DIC(tionary) to expand. DIC must be the last file on the SILEXICON disk, otherwise it cannot expand. Text files should be in drive 0 although you can Spell check text in drive 1 by giving :1. filename to SILEXICON.The intensive user should order the SILEXICON package (3 diskettes, 60,000 words and 40 page booklet, price: `9.00+`1.00 p&p).

TROUBLE SHOOTING:

Always go back to previous steps until the symptoms disappear and start again. IN NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN THE COMPUTER BE DAMAGED BY WRONG CONNECTIONS.
Ring us for assistance whenever you have difficulties. DO NOT take your computer to local shops - the bill may be much more than you expect. We can help you and this will usually be free of charge.
The weakest element of the Sideways system is the BASE UNIT and the socket into which it is installed.
The most common faults are: wrong connections, faulty unit, loose socket and bent pins. Issue 2 and 3 boards could also have broken R153/R163 resistors. ALWAYS PUT BACK S20,S22 AND IF YOU HAVE THE 11 WIRE UNIT, REMOVE THE 2 WIRES GOING TO IC76.
1) SYMPTOM: NO SCREEN, LOUDSPEAKER BUZZING.
Probable cause: Short somewhere or broken R153 on issue 2/3. Diagnostic: faulty unit. Return for replacement.
2) SYMPTOM: 'NO LANGUAGE ?' AFTER REMOVING THE MINI ROM CARTRIDGE:
Diagnostic on 6 wire base unit: faulty unit. Return for replacement.
Diagnostic for the 11 wire base unit: loose connection to IC76. Try to ground the 2 wires going to IC76 and if symptom persists, the unit must be faulty.
3) SYMPTOM: ROM NOT WORKING IN THE MINI CARTRIDGE:
Diagnostic: loose socket or faulty unit.
Try the ROM directly in the same (i.e. rightmost) socket. If the ROM is working the unit must be faulty. Otherwise, do not try to replace the socket yourself unless you are experienced. You should send the computer to us for fitting.
4) SYMPTOM: PROGRAMS CANNOT BE LOADED BACK TO RAM, *DUMP PROGRAM LOOKS OK:
Examine contents of Sideways RAM with EXMON or Diss. with Disc Doctor if you have them handy.
Probable cause: the 2 wires going to Phase 2 (pin 39), R/W (pin 34) are in the wrong way round or faulty unit.
5) SYMPTOM: ONLY SWR F WORKS.
Probable cause: the 3 wires going to IC69 are loose or wrongly installed. Check the colour and position. From top down (starting at pin 10) green, yellow, orange.
RULE: REFER TO THE DIAGRAM, REGARDLESS OF THE COLOUR OF THE WIRES. IT CAN SAVE YOU TIME AND FRUSTRATION.
TRY TO 'FIX' IT YOURSELF BUT YOU SHOULD NOT DESOLDER ICs UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.
