SUSPENDED
(c) Infocom, Inc. 1983

Background
----------
They said you would sleep for half a millennium - not an unreasonable length of
time, considering you'd be in limited cryogenic suspension. Your body would rest
frozen at the planet's nerve center, an underground complex 20 miles beneath the
surface. Your brain, they told you, would be wired to a network of computers;
your mind would continue to operate at a minimal level, overseeing maintenance
of surface-side equilibrium. And you would not awake, so they promised, until
your 500 years had elapsed - barring, of course, the most dire emergency.

Then, and only then, you would be awakened to save your planet by strategically
manipulating six robots, each of whom perceives the world differently. But such
a catastrophe, you have been assured, could not possibly occur.

Good morning.

Essential Information
---------------------
Type |CPM to load Suspended.

You have six robots at your disposal to do your work for you, each with their
own functions and capabilities, described below.

Iris is a visual robot whose mobility is limited as a result of her complex
optical capabilities. She has limited abilities for grasping, carrying etc. and
has only two grasping extensions. She has only a limited mapping of the
Underground Complex stored in her logic circuits and can only wander about the
areas in which she serves a useful purpose.

Waldo is an industrious robot. Since his primary purpose is to manipulate
objects, he has been provided with six grasping extensions. He travels by using
a sonar-feedback mechanism. In addition, Waldo has a highly developed sense of
touch and can prove to be a delicate workman.

Sensa is a peculiar mixture of sensory apparatuses. She can detect vibrational
activity, photon emission sources and ionic discharges. She is also rigged to
automatically perform such sensory tasks as the analysis of diffraction indexes.
Sensa has five extensions; two of these are used for sensory input, while the
other three are grasping extensions.

Auda is all ears, capable of processing and interpreting auditory signals within
the Underground Complex. Though she may not be very helpful in the high-tech
sense, in case of human intervention she is essential. Auda has only one
grasping extension.

Poet is equipped with a diagnostic sensor which is activated when he has been
directed to touch something. His input is translated into occasionally
bewildering output, and though his statements may sometimes lack sense, they
provide an accurate representation of reality. Poet has three grasping
extensions and one extension for touching.

Whiz is an interfacing device between you and the Central Library Core (CLC) - a
huge data bank available to your queries. He can plug in to any of the four CLC
peripherals (the Index, Technical, Advisory and Historical Peripherals), and
find information for you. This information pertains to objects and the
Underground Complex in general. The CLC contains no information about any of the
rooms your robots can visit. Although Whiz is extremely helpful, he does have
his limitations. He has two grasping extensions.

To transfer control to another robot, type commands such as:

POET, EXAMINE IRIS
WALDO, OPEN PANEL
SENSA, GO TO WEATHER MONITORS

You can also give commands to all of the robots at the same time e.g.:

ALL ROBOTS, REPORT LOCATIONS
BOTH IRIS AND WALDO, LOOK

The surface of the planet Contra is controlled by three Filtering Computers
which maintain the weather, food production and the transportation system.
There are monitors to provide you with feedback, and control areas where you can
manually override the settings of the computers.

The difficulty of the game can be configured by typing CONFIGURE, which will
allow you to change the locations of the robots and the times at which certain
events will occur in the game. You can also type ADVANCED to play a more
difficult game, and IMPOSSIBLE to play a totally impossible game.

Use SAVE to save your current game, and RESTORE to load a saved game.

When running Suspended using |CPM, the 64K version of the game will load. If you
are using CP/M Plus, you can boot CP/M Plus and run the 128K version of
Suspended by typing SUSP128 at the A> prompt.
