                              POWER BOX HIGHLANDS

SCREEN DESCRIPTION
------------------
The view on the screen is that of the panel of a Power Signal Box controlling
movements between Stanley Junction and Aviemore on the Highland Main Line
between Perth and Inverness.  All tracks including the double section between
Blair Atholl and Dalwhinnie are signalled for reversible working except for
those south of Stanley Junction.


THE OBJECTIVE
-------------
The timetable is based on the Summer of 1987, with adjustments, and you are
required to control the trains during a full 24 hour period with the object of
ensuring that as far as possible scheduled passenger and freight trains are not
handed over late to your colleagues in adjoining signal boxes.

To complicate matters trains may arrive on your panel late, and you are given
advance warning of this on the control position of the panel. A buzzer
indicates the arrival of a train on the panel and the space bar should be
pressed to acknowledge its arrival and set the signals (see below).  The buzzer
also sounds briefly when a train leaves the panel but this requires no
acknowledgement.  There are a number of unscheduled freights and light engines
to deal with which do not appear in the timetable, and do not run on a regular
basis.  These travel at about 2/5 of the speed of the daytime expresses, whilst
the light engines prefixed 0 are a little quicker.  Since these trains do not
appear in the timetable they must be kept out of the way of the scheduled
traffic but will not incur penalty for delay.  The day starts slowly with
overnight traffic, but efficient regulation of the daytime trains calls for
constant judgement.  A late running train can make up a little time at station
stops and in addition all trains have 3 minutes 'recovery time' allowed between
Dalwhinnie and Dalnacardoch.  Trains using the main lines will be a little
quicker than those routed via loops.


SIGNALLING THE TRAINS
---------------------
Trains from Perth appear a mile or so after leaving that station whilst those
from Inverness appear as soon as they have left the passing loop at Carr
Bridge.  Once a train has appeared directions may be given.  First press the
space bar to stop the clock.  A '?' will appear next to 'Train' in the bottom
right of the screen.  Provided the line ahead is clear type in the 4 figure
reporting number of the train.  The '?' will then appear against 'TO'.  Press
'M' for main line or 'L' for loop according to the direction you wish the train
to take.  The chosen route will turn to green, the signal will change, and no
conflicting move is then possible.  If you change your mind in the middle of
giving an instruction or mis-type a reporting number press 'return' to restart
the clock.  If your reporting number does not match a train on your panel then
the clock will restart anyway.  To travel non-stop between stations repeat the
above procedure and in addition to the starting signal, the distant will clear
as well.  It is not possible to travel non-stop through the passing loops.
When a train is scheduled to stop at a station the starting signal cannot be
cleared until the train has arrived.  Signals automatically return to danger
after the passage of a train.

Time normally advances at 20 second intervals but during busy periods you can
change the increment to 5 seconds by pressing 'f7'.  To revert to 20 second
intervals press 'f1'.

Remember that Stanley Junction, Dalnacardoch and Kincraig are not stations and
all trains may pass these points without stopping.  Kincraig is only a passing
loop and Dalnacardoch is the location of the high speed crossovers on the
reversibly signalled double track section.  If you signal a train 'wrong line'
then the signals displayed will reflect this.  Newtonmore station has no
passing loop or signals and no action is required for trains passing here,
although trains with a booked call take a little longer to travel through the
section.

On completion of 24 hours the assessment screen will automatically be
displayed, but should you wish to finish earlier then, after pressing the space
bar, type 'quit' and the assessment screen will appear.
