The most recent enhancement to Internet addressing is Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR). With the advent of CIDR, the original class-based scheme has been almost completely discarded. Instead, subnetting is used to divide "CIDR blocks" of arbitrary size into smaller "CIDR blocks", a process that can be repeated ad nauseum.
