Serial Links

Serial links take many forms, from 2400 bps dial-up modems (and their faster cousins), to dedicated T3-speed leased lines. The faster serial links, leased lines in particular, typically encapsulate using HDLC or something like it. These techniques are not discussed here.

Dialup modem lines first used SLIP, which has improved into PPP. PPP over ISDN is a popular combination. PPP is not compatible with SLIP, but many systems support both protocols. A compression technique has been developed to improve performance over these links.
