                         Scrambler/UnScrambler V1.5

                            by John Augustine

This program was written in Assembly for MS Dos systems. Uses very little
memory, simple to use, and no "installation" is required.

Please read, "IMPROVE.TXT" for details about improvements.

  PLEASE NOTE:

This is NOT a "free" program. A small donation will be greatly appreciated.
For a minimum donation of $5.00 (U.S.A.), as an added bonus, pick one or more
programs that you would like to receive from "OTH-PGMS.TXT". See the end of
this document for more information.

The purpose of this program is to Scramble or Unscramble any type (example:
binary, text, graphic, etc.) file. The size (a few bytes or megabytes) of the
file doesn't matter. The file/s is/are scrambled/unscrambled using a "key"
for security. The "key" is NOT stored anywhere except in your head. The
"key" can be anything you want, from a word or number to a sentence. Scrambler
can process one, a select group, or all the files in a directory in a single
pass!

  IMPORTANT NOTE:

Scrambler never "touches" (modifies) the original file/s. It creates a new
scrambled (or unscrambled) file/s.

For the "Key", I recommend using a sentence instead of a single word for
greater security. Don't use a common phrase that someone might guess. The
"key" is case sensitive so make sure you remember that too.

"Key" example (without quotes): "i have a message for you"

   SCRAMBLER'S PERFORMANCE DEMO:

Scrambler's process is far more secure than the "password" technique, as
well as other techniques I've learned about in the past. The "key" is not
stored anywhere. To demonstrate how well Scrambler performs, I have included
"1000-A.SSS" file. This is a scrambled file, created from a file with 1000
"A"s. A simple four letter word, "test" was used for the "key" in order to
demonstrate how well a simple "key" has scrambled a file.

  1. Unscramble (V1.4) "1000-A.SSS" file by entering "test" (lower case) for
the "key".

  2. For the extension (new unscrambled file), enter "UUU" or anything else
(not "SSS").

  3. To view results, use Scrambler's file viewer and enter (without quotes),
"1000-A.*". NOTE: This will allow you to see the scrambled file, "1000-A.SSS"
first, followed by the unscrambled file, "1000-A.UUU" (by pressing Enter for
the next file).

If you find it hard to believe that a simple word can scramble a file so
well, delete "1000-A.SSS". Next, Scramble "1000-A.UUU" with any simple word
you want to try and view the results.

  IMPORTANT NOTE:

The scrambled file/s created will have ".SSS" extension added. You can
always change the extension if you prefer since the Unscramble function does
not expect the extension to be ".SSS" (although it displays ".SSS" at the
prompt).

  CAUTION:

If you are processing more than one file at the same time, make sure that
none of the files involved have the same base name, example: "REPORT.001",
"REPORT.002". Scrambler adds ".SSS" extension to every Scrambled file it
creates. No harm will come to the original files (never "touched"), but there
will be only one "REPORT.SSS" (last file scrambled) instead of two or more
files due to the same base name ("REPORT").

  USE NOTE:

You can put the name of a file/s at the command line, example (without
quotes): "SCRAMBLE *.DOC" (to Scramble all ".DOC" Files).

  or

"SCRAMBLE" and press Enter (you can select which file/s (or enter the
filename) within Scrambler).

  "MESSAGE.SSS"

Here is another scrambled file. To see what it is, enter (lower case without
quotes), "i have a message for you" (no period) for the "key". I suggest "TXT"
for the extension since the new unscrambled file is text.

  CONCLUSION:

This is NOT a "Free" program. A small Donation will be Greatly Appreciated.
For a minimum donation of $5.00 (U.S.A.), as an added BONUS, pick one or more
programs that you would like to receive from the "OTH-PGMS.TXT" (List of MS
Dos based programs). I will send it/them to you on a 3.5" disk, or attach
it/them to e-mail if you prefer. Please include your e-mail address with your
donation and the name/s of the other program/s you want (if you want any), to
receive via e-mail. You will be entitled to receive all improved and new
programs (you select) developed in the future (will be sent to you by e-mail).

Remember to include a note listing which program/s you would like to receive
(if you want any), and if you want to be notified of future developments. The
donation will motivate me to develop more programs and make improvements (add
new features).

Comments or complaints are always welcomed. If you use "Snail Mail" and
expect a reply, please include a S.A.S.E.
